Keschtnriggl – Chestnut Days in Lana and environs
Autumn in South Tyrol is a great season full of impressions, the trees on the wood covered mountains change their colours, the atmospheric conditions are an invitation to gather in pubs and restaurants, to spend some cheerful days enjoying the fruits of the  harvest’s such as  young wine, local delicacies and roasted chestnuts, also called „Toerggelen“, which is a popular costume in this region. The chestnut is of course the centre of the cestnut days in Lana and the surrounding  villages of Tisens, Prissian and Voellan, where the so called „Keschtnriggl“, the chestnut feast, takes place in October. „Keschtnriggl“ is the name of the braided basket that was used to shake the hot chestnuts to separate the shell from the fruit.
Many restaurants, guest houses, inns and wine restaurants of the villages participate in the chestnut days by offering typical menus and events so their guests can enjoy traditional meals based on old recipes. One of the rediscovered recipes is that for chestnut bread that was once an integral part of the local diet. Apart from the chestnut bread, chestnut doughnuts and roasted chestnuts will also be on offer on the streets, and restaurant will served the typical October menu. Furthermore one can participate in cookery courses, lectures on chestnut culture, or take guided tours and chestnut hikes through the forest or from farm to farm and even from castle to castle. Arts and handicraft made from materials gathered from chestnut trees will be on offer at the markets.
The highlight of the chestnut days is doubtless the „Toerggele“-feast in the village of Tisens. Homemade delicacies, young wine and open-air roasted chestnuts accompany the village feast that takes place on the streets and under the alcoves of the farm houses.
