Fruit and Pomace Brandies
The distillation of spirits has a long tradition in Merano and its environs. Brandies made from pomace such as
Treber and traditionally-produced fruit brandies are made from high quality organic products which are either cultivated or grow wild in Merano and its environs. The range of liquors is as rich as the variety of fruit that grows in the area.
Ancient Knowledge
The bitter-tasting root spirits distilled from
Alpine Gentian or Masterwort have a much older history then other types, but these have been rediscovered and upgraded only recently. This is especially the case with
Masterwort, now presented as the Alpine answer to ginseng. These roots and their spirits have been used by South Tyrolean farmers to cleanse and disinfect their homes for centuries until today, and they also possess different medicinal properties, functioning as a
tonic,
antiseptic and
diuretic.
Types of Spirits and Brandies
The
“Obstler”, a fruit brandy distilled from apples and pears is the most highly regarded spirit in Merano and its Environs, along with Treber. Experts particularly appreciate this drink for its finely attuned and diverse aromas. In recent years, more and more pure non-hybrid apple brandy types are also being produced. The same method applies to pomace-based spirits like Treber, and its close cousin,
Grappa. This method has not only produced some extremely high
quality pomace brandies in recent years, but also particularly refined spirits made from local fruits such as Apricot, Plum and Pear. Until today,
Williams is considered the leader among the different kinds of pear liquors. It is referred to as the most aromatic and intense and therefore the most popular spirit. In addition, visitors are often invited by residents to experience the popular Tyrolean walnut liqueur
“Nusseler”, which is similar to the Italian “Nocino”, or the local Cherry brandy.
Tip:
Grappa from South Tyrol is a perfect digestivo and is best served in glasses in tulip form. The ideal temperature is between 15° and 18° Celsius.
